PARTING OF WAYS

The main points of my story thus far are as follows: During the 1950s, William Homan Thorpe and Charles Seeger independently inspired mythologies of objective mechanical transcriptions of sound. Closer inspection of their stories reveals preexisting machines very like theirs, and preexisting qualms about the subjectivity of the Gestalt school’s behavioral research. Those qualms, in turn, raise the question of what was at stake in the mechanical transcription of sound.
